Virat Kohli Announces Retirement from Test Cricket After 14 Remarkable Years

Just days after Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket, Virat Kohli has also announced his retirement from the red-ball format. The news comes as a surprise to many fans, especially with India’s important tour of England just around the corner. Reports had suggested that the BCCI wanted Kohli to delay his decision, but the star cricketer decided to step away on his own terms.

Kohli made the announcement through a heartfelt post on Instagram, ending a legendary 14-year journey in Test cricket. While he retires from the longest format of the game, the 36-year-old confirmed that he will continue to play One Day Internationals (ODIs), keeping the 2027 World Cup in mind.

Kohli's Emotional Farewell Message

“It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on,” Kohli wrote.

He added, “There’s something deeply personal about playing in whites. The quiet grind, the long days, the small moments that no one sees but stay with you forever.

“As I step away from this format, it’s not easy — but it feels right. I’ve given it everything I had, and it’s given me back so much more than I could’ve hoped for. I’m walking away with a heart full of gratitude — for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way. I’ll always look back at my Test career with a smile. #269, signing off.”

His Last Match and Leadership Legacy

Virat Kohli played his last Test match during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, with his final appearance coming in the fifth Test at Sydney.

He will be especially remembered for his time as India’s Test captain from 2014 to 2022. During his captaincy, Kohli led India in 68 Tests, winning 40 of them — making him the most successful Indian Test captain in history.

Globally, he stands fourth on the list of most successful Test captains, behind only Graeme Smith (53 wins), Ricky Ponting (48), and Steve Waugh (41). Under his leadership, India also reached the final of the first-ever World Test Championship in 2021, though they lost to New Zealand.

Kohli’s Test Career in Numbers

  • Total Matches: 123 Tests

  • Runs Scored: 9,230

  • Centuries: 30

  • Half-centuries: 31

Virat Kohli’s Test career was not just about runs and centuries — it was about passion, intensity, and a deep love for the format. He leaves behind a legacy that will inspire generations of cricketers.
